On the morning of Thursday, 25th of May, the Islamic Ahlul-Bayt Foundation of New Zealand (IAFONZ) had the pleasure of hosting its first ever, Pink Ribbon Breakfast – a fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Foundation.
The aim of this event was to create awareness and education for the ladies of our community whilst raising money for a great cause. This was neatly wrapped around a fun-filled morning with an amazing breakfast buffet spread, a raffle draw, and some spot prizes. The theme was naturally “Pink” and this radiated from the decor, to the breakfast items and the ladies themselves.
The morning began with a welcome speech by Fazilat Rashid, a Trustee of the foundation, followed by a quick fire quiz on breast cancer itself, by Aliya Mahmood. Our guest speaker, Helen Wong from Counties Manukau District Health Board, concluded the programme with a short talk and opening the floor for a Question & Answer session.
Overall, 45 ladies attended and we managed to raise a total of $467.18 for the Breast Cancer Foundation.
Breast Cancer affects 3,000 New Zealand women a year, and the conservative nature of our community meant it was very important to allow the women to have a forum in which they can discuss and learn how to be “breast aware”.
We aim to continue events of a similar nature in the future for the health and well-being of our community.
